Three Tuesdays, beginning January 12
from 2-4:30pm

This class meets online on Zoom beginning at 2pm on Tuesday, January 12.

Your class confirmation email will contain the Zoom class link.

There are so many ways to engage your creative mind on a regular basis without the pressure of always completing a painting. During this class, students will compile a library of painting ideas: a nice stockpile that will provide inspiration when the time comes to paint. Lots of fun and some challenging exercises, combined with photographs and live observation, will kickstart the creative brain and build excitement. Class will include lessons in value sketches and color studies with focus on composition, design elements, color combinations, and lots more!

Most of our work will be on a smaller scale to compile a library of ideas, between 5 x 7 - 8x10, we will talk about shapes and sizes in first class

Sanded pastel papers in a variety of values- light, medium, dark ( such as Art Specturm, UArt, Pastelmat and Pastel Premier).

Pastel paper such as Canson, my favorite for studies is moonstone and black

Sketchbook for recording ideas and exercises- have tape handy!

A selection of both hard and soft pastels. Have some muted and vibrant colors to enhance your palette.

Drawing tools: sketchbook, pencils - preferably soft (B), charcoal, black marker, ruler, kneaded eraser, colored markers or pencils

Scissors or knife

For wet underpainting: 1” flat brush, extras if you have them in various widths, a fan brush is handy! Container for water, denatured alcohol or rubbing alcohol. Paper towels. Feel free to use wet mediums such as gouache, watercolor, acrylic inks

Easel and a board to place your pastel paper on so you can work in an upright or angled position. If you do not have an easel, prop your board up on an angle.

Photos: Look for images with contrast so there is a play of values ( lights and darks). I would suggest that if you print your photo that you do so on photo paper to ensure good reproduction. I can provide digital photos. provides photos free from copyright infringements.
