Light up that landscape with color palettes that emphasize a flash or a flicker of light falling on objects, or maybe light so strong it appears to bleach out the color of objects. Participants will experiment with color palettes that emphasize a glow or sense of brightness. We will continue exploring the key attributes of color with focus on how to increase the feeling of highly lit areas in a painting. Instruction will include tips on how to include figures and buildings, preliminary value sketches, composition, and perspective. This class will also use underpainting techniques.
Sketchbook, pencil, pen, charcoal, a ruler, and rubbing alcohol ( or water).
Selection of hard and soft pastels –contact Betsy if you have questions
Preference for sanded pastel paper such as UArt, Pastelmat, Pastel Premier,Lux or Art Spectrum. If you cannot purchase sanded papers, Canson MiTeines is a good alternative.
Backing board to tape your pastel paper to for support.
Easel or slanted surface - working in an upright angle reduces the collection of pastel dust on the painting surface
We will be doing underpainting: gouache, watercolor, or rubbing alcohol for use with pastels
Variety of brushes, minimum required is 1” flat
